Library in Kartong
The most recent project AiDucatius was a part of was the founding of a small library for the village of Kartong. English books were collected primarily from European countries and sent down to Kartong. In addition to these books, we also purchased African literature in Gambia for the new library. Our colleague, Margareta Widerholm, spent many months in Kartong to build up the library in Kartong. She worked long and hard cleaning, sorting and alphabetizing the library until its inauguration in spring 2009. The local students in Kartong have now learned how to use the library, read books, and leave the books at the library after having read them.
One problem is that the library has no electricity and therefore is only open during day light hours. This fact prevents some students to use the library due to other duties after school. This is why AiDucatius is now collecting funds to provide the library with solar panels so the local students can enjoy reading after sunset as well.
